Got a problem on the road network? Let see if we can help...

A62 Smart Corridor

Black Sky Thinking Consultancy supported Kirklees Council UTC deliver one of the key major projects over the last few years. We provided project contact support, traffic management liaison, network management, design services, site supervision and commissioning/validation.

The corridor was made up of seven key traffic signal junctions which needed to be built alongside the existing infrastructure which required technical understanding of the build process and the interaction with other civil engineering infrastructure. Our biggest challenge was managing the traffic demand and congestion throughout the construction phasing.

We supported the Council and liaised with the contractor to ensure the best solutions were implemented on street to reduce delays to drivers while maintaining safety to construction workers. BSTC was a major part in the success of the scheme reducing journey time and improving cycle and pedestrian facilities.

The graph above shows that the A62 scheme with network improvements completed by UTC have completely removed the peak during the day (where lunchtime is critical) with over 4 minutes journey time reduction equating to 38% journey time improvement.

The graph above shows reflects a positive result for the A62 scheme and work completed by UTC. The evening peak has also been removed with over 8 minutes of journey time saved which equates to 49% reduction.

Holmfirth Town Centre Access

Holmfirth is a popular village in Kirklees Council which is constraint by a river and valley which see high volumes of traffic due to the strategic location of the village. Black Sky Thinking Consultancy is supporting Kirklees Council deliver a town centre access improvement scheme which includes upgrading the zebra crossings to signalised crossings which will be linked to the main T-junction.

This scheme will allow for greater control of the traffic demand and reduce the overall congestion. The key challenge with this project is buildability and managing the traffic demand while the construction takes place. BSTC is providing design services, traffic management liaison, traffic modelling and site supervision.

Transpennine Route Upgrade

TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is one of the largest schemes in the north which looks to improve the rail services between Manchester and Leeds. Black Sky Thinking Consultancy have been supporting Kirklees Council manage the infrastructure interactions between TRU and the traffic signals.

In addition, we have been liaising with TRU around the traffic management to ensure the network does not suffer delays due to the planned works and solutions are put forward to ensure congestion is kept to a minimum.

Warrington Borough Council Cyclops - MOVA Validation

Warrington Borough Council put a new Cyclops junction in at Lovely Lane / Bewsey Road, this is the first Cyclops junction in Warrington and funding by the active travel scheme. BSTC supported the Council by completing MOVA validation to optimise the operation (signal timings) to maximise performance for all users.

MOVA Basic Training

Recently provided training to SLR Consultancy with some great feedback:

"I contacted Tom after a recommendation from a contact at PTV Group. As an experienced VISSIM user I had a basic understanding of PC-MOVA and MOVA Tools, but wanted to further my understanding of the software through a one-to-one training day. I found Tom’s training to be thorough but most importantly, practical. Whilst touching on the theoretical side and explaining the operation of MOVA on street I was keen primarily to understand PC-MOVA and its application to modelling software to enhance the service we can offer to clients as microsimulation specialists. Tom prepared a very informative presentation for the first half, turning to practical examples for the second half, covering a number of topics I had wanted to learn more about. Whilst there’s plenty more to learn I feel better prepared following Tom’s assistance, and we will certainly be inviting Tom back to cover more advanced aspects of the software." - SLR Consultancy

GLF - Detection Fixes / MOVA Validation

BSTC has been support Kirklees Council deliver their GLF funding on the A62 corridor one of their first schemes included finding a solution to detection issues, implementing said solution and carrying out MOVA validation. The result is shown in the graph where the congestion has been mitigated.
